Burnishing: Making Pencil Look Like Paint

Six stops: guess why colored pencil looks grainy, learn the paper's tooth, use a paper simulator (light layers vs. pressing hard first vs. burnishing), spot the mistake, make a 3-box practice strip, then pick the right burnishing pencil for each color in your piece.

For teachers

Run Stop 3 (the simulator) on the projector and let students call out what to click — have them predict what 'Press hard first' will do before you click it. The practice strip in Stop 5 is the exit ticket. Leads into The Color of Home.
